A. Data Collected Automatically (Local Data)
To function as a productivity and screen-time tracker, Focus operates primarily on your device. We automatically collect and process:
- Browsing History & Active Tab Information: We monitor the URL of your active tab solely to calculate time spent on specific domains and enforce your customized blocking rules.
- User Preferences: Your daily limits, focus session rules, blocklists, and UI preferences are stored via Chrome’s local storage mechanism (
chrome.storage.local).
Note on Browsing Data: The detailed, page-by-page URL history is processed locally on your device to aggregate time spent per domain (e.g., converting youtube.com/watch?v=123 to simply youtube.com). We do not transmit or store your exact, full browsing history on our servers.
B. Data Collected with Authentication (Cloud Sync)
If you opt-in to our Cloud Sync, Leaderboard, and Social features by logging in via Google Auth, we collect:
- Account Information: Your Google email address, display name, user ID, and profile picture.
- Aggregated Domain Usage: The total time you have spent on specific domains (e.g., 40 minutes on reddit.com) to provide cross-device syncing and leaderboard features.
- Social Connections: Your in-app friend list and shared activity status.
We use the collected data strictly to provide, maintain, and improve the Focus extension:
- Core Functionality: To track your site usage, block distractions, and run Pomodoro timers.
- Cloud Synchronization: To back up your settings and data securely to our Firebase backend, ensuring seamless transitions across your devices.
- Community Features: To populate global leaderboards with anonymized metrics and to facilitate accountability systems between your approved friends.
- Service Improvements: To analyze aggregated, strictly non-personally identifiable usage patterns to improve the extension.
We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal data to third parties. We will only share data under the following circumstances:
- With Your Consent: For example, when you explicitly choose to share your screen-time status or focus history with friends within the app.
- Service Providers: With trusted third-party infrastructure providers (e.g., Google Cloud/Firebase for database hosting, Stripe for payment processing) who are strictly bound by confidentiality obligations.
- Legal Compliance: If required by law, subpoena, or similar legal process, or to protect our rights or the safety of our users.
4. Third-Party Integrations
- Firebase / Google Cloud: Used for database, hosting, and authentication.
- Stripe: Used securely for premium subscription processing. We do not store or process your credit card numbers on our servers.
- Google OAuth: Used to verify your identity.
5. Security of Your Data
We employ industry-standard security measures, including encryption in transit (HTTPS/SSL) and secure backend infrastructure via Firebase, to protect your data from unauthorized access or disclosure.
6. Your Data Rights
You have the right to:
- Access: View the data we hold about you by viewing your profile within the extension.
- Delete: You can delete your account and all associated data on our servers by contacting us or using the “Reset All Data” option within the extension settings and disconnecting your Google account.
- Opt-out: You can use the core time-tracking and blocking features of Focus completely offline/locally without logging in.
